Pet Trackers
Advice
Pet Trackers
Sadly we take an abundance of calls saying that someone’s cat has gone missing. This is a very worrisome and upsetting time for owners.
With the technology at our fingertips today we hope that this will now help prevent cats going missing, or if they do we have the technology to find them.
What are GPS trackers?
GPS trackers are a tracking device that’s added onto a safety release collar or a breakaway collar. This tracking device comes with an app on your phone so you can stalk your kitty all day long. How fabulous!
Why are GPS trackers important?
When your kitty doesn’t come home all you have to do is turn on your phone and find it. But the darkness behind it is simply this. If you notice that you cat has stopped moving and it’s near a busy or main road you have a 50/50 chance that something has happened.
At which point you can easily locate your cat instead of trying to find it. If it’s been hurt or injured you have time to quickly get veterinary help. Sadly if the enaventable has happened, as devastating as this is you know what’s happened to you kitty. It’s the not knowing that’s so upsetting when a cat goes missing. So simply put GPS trackers are what we like to call “piece of mind”.
Which GPS tracker should I get?
There are so many GPS cat trackers on the market that it’s a little overwhelming when choosing the best one for your beloved kitty.
When choosing a tracker this is what your looking for
- The range or distance the trackers cover.
- Battery life and how long does it last
- Always read and check reviews before buying
We suggest going to “which” magazine as they had done intensive research on which tracker is best.
Please note, whilst the cheaper trackers might seem inviting it’s also a false economy. You could buy a tracker for £14.99 and find that the tracking drops off due to the range or coverage. So then you upgrade. You spend a further £25.00 on a good tracker which in turn means that you have now spent the money on two trackers which are the same cost as some of the top GPS trackers.
It might be an initial cost going for a good tracker but in the long run saves you money. We suggest looking at a tracker that comes with a free app to keep you costs low.
There are however certain breeds of cats that are roamers and will absolutely travel a fair distance every day. Bengals being one of these breeds. They are part wild so it’s in their DNA.
For this reason if you know that you have a breed of cat or a cat that’s shown it’s self to roam may we suggest a tracker like Tractive which has unlimited tracking. Whilst the tracker looks big it needs to be to carry the technology required, however the device itself it lightweight. You will need to pay for the app every month, but this cost is worth it as you paying for the technology provided to keep you kitty safe.
Please note any trackers must go on a breakaway collar or safety release collar. This is to ensure that if the collar gets caught outside your kitty won’t get stuck, hurt or injured. The collar will simply release itself in the event of an emergency.
Whilst this is a good for the cat, when it comes home without its tracker people will worry. Don’t. It’s a GPS tracker all you do is turn on your phone, locate the tracker, pick it up and place back on the cat.
We highly suggest getting your cat used to wearing the collar and tracker indoors first for a few weeks. Hopefully this will make it comfortable when they start to go outside. We suggest whilst your cat is adjusting for the first four weeks after adoption indoors to take the tracker and collar of at night just for a little more comfort for your kitty.
A GPS tracker will help to save your cats life. That’s why at Catitude highly recommend every outdoor cat should have one. Safety for the cat. Piece of mind for the owners. It’s a win win.
